Pushpa lives a wealthy lifestyle with her widowed father, a Zamindar. She is of marriageable age and her father has found a groom named Mohan, and he would like to get them married soon. On the occasion of his birthday a group of traveling actors and singers are asked to perform. Pushpa sees their performance, likes the actor named Raja, and both fall in love with each other. Mohan is enraged when he hears of this, and asks his future father-in-law to get rid of the entire troupe. But her father considers Raja a suitable young man and has no objections to Pushpa getting married to him. He ask Raja to bring his mother so that he can meet with her and finalize the marriage. When he finally gets to meet Raja's mom, Shubhlaxmi, who used to work as a maid-servant in their palatial home, he changes his mind, fearing what the community will think when they find out he has arranged Pushpa's marriage with the son of a maid-servant. He asks Shubhlaxmi to walk out of Raja's life, and it is then and only then will the marriage take place. Shubhlaxmi, in the interest of the future of her son, agrees to do so, but will Raja agree to marry Pushpa under these circumstances?
