Soft-spoken, submissive, yet romantically inclined Suraj Bhandari meets with village belle, Shalu, quite his very opposite, both fall in love and get married. When he returns home to his oppressively dominating mother, Kamla, who wants him to wed Poonawala's daughter, he meekly agrees to do so. Just when the arrangements are being finalized, Shalu shows up, and he admits that he did marry her. Shalu welcomes herself in the household, consisting of Kailash, Kamla's husband; Vicky, younger son; and a orphaned girl named Aarti. Shalu soon finds out that Kamla has no room for her and wants to get rid of her for good by hook or by crook. Soon she is embroiled in household politics and accused of stealing jewelery and cash which she denies, but the evidence proves otherwise, and must leave or else be arrested by the police.26 Aug 1988
