Daayan controversy drags makers to Delhi

The National Women's Commission summoned producers of 'Ek Thi Daayan' Ekta Kapoor and Vishal Bhardwaj on Thursday, regarding wiccan Ipsita Roy Chakraverti's petition to the President, asking for a ban on the film. The duo is expected to appear before the Commission next week and explain their stand on the portrayal of witches in the upcoming horror film. Based on the meeting, the Commission will decide whether they want to watch the film before its release. The letter from the Commission has ruffled quite a few feathers at Balaji, as well as Vishal's office.

"It has come as a shock to Ekta, Vishal and the entire cast and crew of the film. They did not expect this to snowball into such a serious issue," said a source close to the film. When contacted, Balaji officials refused to comment. However, the film's spokesperson confirmed that Vishal and Ekta have received the summons. Apparently, the prompt action by the Commission is a result of the recommendation that came directly from the President's Office. TOI had reported earlier that Balaji had invited Chakraverti to be a part of Ek Thi Daayan's promotional campaign, but she took offence with the way witches are allegedly portrayed in the film.
