Filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee, known for formula defying films such as 'Love Sex Aur Dhokha' and 'Khosla Ka Ghosla', today said that success of commercial films was actually good news for filmmakers like him. "When a commercial film does business of 200-300 crore... it actually helps filmmakers like Anurag Kashyap and I. As the studios backing such films will put this money into films like Love Sex Aur Dhokha, Gangs of Wasseypur. So this helps us to survive," Dibakar said at a panel discussion on '100 years of cinema and beyond' on the second day of FICCI Frames 2013 here.At the same time, he said, "Just because certain films are making money, doesn't mean you should make them too. You should do what you want to do".
Anurag Kashyap said he did not face any pressure from studios to stick to formula. "Studios never put pressure. They know the kind of films I want to make. I have chosen to make a certain kind of films and I will bear the consequences. I will make something that should appeal to me first," he said. While Karan Johar, successful 'formula film-maker', said the 'Rs 100 crore' yardstick (of hit film) was a media creation. "This Rs 100 crore thing is all media driven. There are predictions...projection and all that is made. No one talks about the brilliance of the film. All we talk about is the stars and 100 crore," Johar said.
