Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor is expected to join the bandwagon of celebrities who have endorsed traffic safety initiatives in Delhi. She is expected to join Delhi Traffic Police in advising two-wheeler drivers to wear helmets and strap them properly while driving.
Sources in Delhi Traffic Police confirmed that she will be assisting cops in an awareness program on Saturday. "She will be telling people to wear helmets and also strap them securely, whether they are the driver or the pillion rider," said a source.
According to police officials, helmets are essential for both driver and pillion rider as they are equally at risk when on the road. Hospital officials also claim that the extent of head injury is more in women riding pillion than men riding a two-wheeler.
The woman sitting in the rear has nothing to hold on to unlike the driver who steers the bike or scooter. By exempting women from wearing helmets, they are as a result exposed to a higher risk of head injury, claimed officials.
