Nepal stops screening Bollywood films for 'vulgarity'

The Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist is demanding the government give priority to locally made movies and strictly censor Hindi films. Party spokesperson Pumpha Bhusal said Friday it was giving the government until next week to comply. The party is a breakaway group of the main Communist Party in Nepal and has a history of past violence against its opponents.

Bollywood movies are very popular in Nepal, and the party said it wants local films to get a share of the market, too. In another dispute earlier this week, supporters of the breakaway Communist party gathered at border crossings to stop Indian vehicles from entering Nepal. The party later said it was going to allow trucks with essential goods like oil, gas and food to enter. Indian trucks and vehicles are allowed to enter Nepal, while Nepalese vehicles are not allowed in Indian territories.
