As Andrew Strauss tuned-up for this week’s Lord’s Test with an unbeaten hundred to go with the 78 he made in the first innings, India must be hoping that their survival instinct kicks in before then as their cricket in the three-day match against Somerset has been dire, despite the match petering out to a draw.
It may be too early to describe their tour as being in tatters, despite Peter Trego dismantling their bowlers with a savagely-struck 85 that took 57 balls and included seven sixes and seven fours. But unless huge improvements are made, they could struggle to match Sri Lanka, who were more lame than game as the warm-up act of the summer.
Having arrived in England last Tuesday, India have given more than a passable impression of not wanting to be here. Yesterday, after Suresh Raina’s swashbuckling century had brought them a semblance of dignity, they took the field following Somerset’s decision to not enforce the follow-on – without Sachin Tendulkar or Zaheer Khan.
