"I sat in the movie hall wondering what the sweet Barfi had to do with this movie. The realisation stuck in a while. It was not just Barfi's character that made it sweet but the uncommon storyline that left a smile on my face", says Shivangi Singh, a student of Statistics Honours, Kirori Mal College. The usual frowning and dull faces entering in the movie hall transformed into bright and delighted ones once they were out. That's the impact this movie had on its audience. A few emotional scenes made people cry too but the overall effect it had is common to all. It is termed as the cutest and delightful movie of all times adorned by adorable characters.
Isn't this reason enough for it to be India's representative in Oscars? As far as people leave their worries behind and walk out of the movie hall with a good feeling in their hearts, all enthusiastic and cheered up to go for it the second time. The way it delineates the differently-abled characters as high spirited and full of life even in their present situation teaches us to live our life to the fullest and make it king size. Captivating the audiences in its exclusive story-telling and motivating uniquely-abled people to "Live life Barfi Style" it surely deserves entry into Oscars.
The decision of choosing Barfi for Oscars foreign language entry by the Film Federation of India was questioned by many people as director Anurag Basu was accused with plagiarism charges. It is criticised for duplicating scenes from "The Notebook" and "Amelie" and some portions being plainly lifted from the Charlie Chaplin films. It was never concealed from the audience that it's inspired by Chaplin as credits were given in the beginning. Ranbir's Chaplinesque mannerism in the movie is easily accepted by the makers. The director's defense in response to the accusation is, "It baffles me why people are not appreciating the original plot, screenplay, characters and situations.
The other films that are contenders for the Oscars are really good films. I am very privileged to be in that group. If Oscar winners like 'The Artist' (2011) can take inspiration, why can't we?" Many believe those great moments of cinema that one has watched, stays with one and comes out in their work. For the Chairperson of Oscars Committee, India Manju Borah it is the product that matters, not the star or the maker. He says, "We selected Barfi because of its treatment and freshness. It leaves you happy and hopeful. There's no moment of sorrow. And every Oscar movie is about hope and happiness."
11-member jury decides out of the given 20 Indian films from various languages. Though Barfi did not get all 11 votes yet it was chosen by the majority even after a three round dissection and selection. Kahaani, Heroine and Gangs of Wasseypur were some other contenders from the Hindi section which were not selected over Barfi. The counterparts also did a good job but they were not out of the box. They furnished the usual Hindi action, drama and thriller genre. We do have enough evidence to say that Barfi deserves to be a part of the Oscar nomination too let alone India's Oscar entry.
When inquired about the same issue from college students, all of them had one common thing to say, 'Barfi is well deserved' along with a "Yes" in unison! Kajal Srivastava from Hansraj College feels that, "It shows the emotions that are long lost in movies and real life. Sans glamour and clichéd romantic scenes, I a non believer in love also adore the small gestures in which it is presented." "A love story of two people lagging basic senses yet feeling the strong emotions of love", says Vinati Bhola, a law student from the Vivekananda Institute of Professional Studies, IP University.
Bhumika Yadav pursuing English Honours from Kirori Mal College believes that it could have been utterly tragic or dramatic but the director chose to keep it simple yet creating an impact that will leave one in awe. I believe that it is a movie for people of all ages from 8 to 80. It talks about celebrating life in the daintiest and pleasant manner possible. I believe that Barfi is Oscar worthy and is capable of getting India an Academy Award this year. What's your call?
