Right films at the right time, why Ranbir Kapoor is a threat to the Khans

With some award winning performances to his credit, meaty endorsement deals and an impressive lineage of films for the following year, Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor is rocking at 30. Anurag Basu, Imtiaz Ali to Anurag Kashyap, the most talked about Bollywood directors at the moment are busy wooing Ranbir these days. They were also spotted at his birthday bash lately, Ranbir hosted for his ‘close’ friends. Ranbir will be seen playing the lead role in Kashyap’s ‘Bomaby Velvet’ and Basu’s film on the life of singer Kishore Kumar.

His latest release ‘Barfi!’ is still going great guns at the box office. Interestingly, the collections of his cousin Kareena Kapoor’s much awaited film ‘Heroine’ were also affected because of ‘Barfi!’. Made on a budget of Rs 30 crore, ‘Barfi!’ has earned more than Rs 80 crore in two weeks. ‘Barfi!’ has been selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2013. Whether Ranbir will bring home the Oscar trophy or not is difficult to predict, but he has definitely proved that he is the next Bollywood superstar.

Grandson of legendary actor Raj Kapoor, son of Bollywood’s most loved couple Rishi and Neetu Kapoor, Ranbir was never a stranger to the industry. Instead of asking his father to launch him, Ranbir worked as an assistant with Sanjay Leela Bhansali during the shooting of ‘Black’. And then, he made his grand debut with Bhansali’s romantic film ‘Saawariya’ in 2007. Though Sonam Kapoor and Ranbir started their Bollywood journey together, but Ranbir is definitely way ahead of her. ‘Saawariya’ turned out to be a box office dud, but Ranbir Kapoor earned loads of accolades from the critics and audiences for his performance. The same was reflected at the Filmfare awards too as he bagged the best male debut trophy.

With ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’ he proved that he is here to stay. Despite three stunning actresses in the movie, Ranir undoubtedly dominated ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’. With ‘Wake Up Sid’ he became the ultimate youth icon. Though he disappointed his fans with ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’, but he soon made a comeback with ‘Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year’. He was impressive in ‘Raajneeti’ and ‘Anjaana Anjaani’ too. However, it was Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Rockstar’ which became a turning point in his career and he swept all the award functions last year.

Within just five years of his career, Ranbir Kapoor has made a place for himself in Bollywood. Imran Khan and Neil Nitin Mukesh, who also made their Bollywood debut around the same time, do not have an impressive career graph like Ranbir. As being reported, Ranbir Kapoor also plans to revive his late grandfather’s production banner RK Films.

So the famous Khan trio, Salman, Shah Rukh and Aamir who are ruling the industry from years have all the reasons to feel insecure now. During an interview once, Salman Khan was asked, from the new lot of actors, who has the potential of becoming the next superstar, he said, “Ranbir Kapoor and Imran Khan are here to stay for a long time.” Even we agree with that completely.
