Priyanka Chopra is on the verge of becoming the next big thing on the music block with her debut single, In My City. We can say, because she made us listen to it on her iPod on Thursday morning, before anyone else could hear it. Eclectic, peppy, and electrifying from the start, the 3 min 40 sec number turns out to be very relatable, as PC croons in her accented tone, inviting everyone to the metaphoric dwelling of her city.

“It’s about being proud of where I come from. It’s inviting the world to my city and my city could be anywhere. I’ve had such a nomadic upbringing,” she says. The tempo is pacy and the pitch is high, as it should be for a number that has Black Eyed Peas member Will.I.Am on the guest vocals. It almost feels as if one’s listening to a BEP number. The song explodes after a point in its massiveness and stays in the head. The impeccable notes and pitch makes one wonder if it’s really Priyanka. Ask her if she’d be disappointed if fans told her it doesn’t sound like her voice, and she says, “Most people will say that. I know they will. But then they’ve never heard me sing before. It is me, just me.”

But is her voice digitally modulated, as is generally done internationally? “No it’s not. I may sound different just because of the pitch. I have a very high range. My talking voice is different from when I sing.” What about the accent? “Dekho accent toh I always had. Everybody knows that. My accent is natural. Now finally its come to good use,” she laughs.
