I was a reluctant actress: Poonam Dhillon

Actress Poonam Dhillon has been part of the film industry for many years, and has delved into theatre as well in recent times. Here are excerpts from her chat with us.

How did your new play U Turn come about?
I’ve been wanting to do a role like this, which was a hit Marathi play, and so when the producer approached me, I took it up immediately. Over the years, I’ve not had the courage to get into theatre, but after I did my first play, The Perfect Husband, I couldn’t wait to be on stage again.

Being an actor, what was the apprehension about theatre?
Unlike movies, on stage there are no second chances. Everything is live. If someone messes up, forgets a line, gives the wrong cue, you need to have the presence of mind to move the play along.

Do you feel at this point, that you should have got into theatre sooner?
No, back then we used to shoot 12-14 films at a time, and couldn’t commit time to theatre. I used to be a reluctant actor, but now I am more relaxed and confident and so can use that experience in theatre as well.

You’re doing Prabhudheva’s next film. What’s the character you’re playing?
It’s unlike any role I’ve ever done before. I play the dominating mother who is totally against the girl her son has fallen for. It’s not that she is a negative character, just fiercely clear in her opinion.

While friendships between actors are rare, your friendship with actress Padmini Kolhapure has lasted for years… With Padmini or other friends the key has always been to prioritise. We grew up together in the industry as teenagers, saw each other get married, have families we’ve been through the ups and downs together. I value my friendships and go out of my way to commit time and energy to them.

Late actress Smita Patil was a friend too. How do you feel when you see her son Prateik?
I get a lump in my throat whenever I meet him. He’s such a sweet boy  I know that his mother is so proud of her son, watching all the good work he is doing.

Are you also writing a book?
I had started writing, but it’s on hold for now. The last time I spoke about it, it got held up, so now I will only talk about it when it happens.
