Saif Ali Khan is basking in the glory of the success of Cocktail, his latest romcom hit as an actor-producer. But before you tell him he has fallen back yet again on the tested loverboy image to score a hit after his disastrous experiment with action by way of Agent Vinod, Saif insists he wants to explore varied genres rather than be typecast in a chocolate-boy rut.

"As filmmakers, we should dream of a variety of genres. I would love to make a dark murder mystery, a ghost story or a proper thriller. These genres are not very popular in India," the actor tells Mail Today. On cue, the 41-year-old points out that he is currently shooting for a zombie comedy, Go Goa Gone, in Mauritius, from where he talked to us.

Being the first producer to explore the genre of zomcoms in Bollywood, Saif also points out how different an experiment it is to make one. At the same time, he admits he is aware of the risks associated with it. "The Indian audience is unpredictable. One can never be sure of what works for them as they reject unceremoniously. For instance, when I produced Agent Vinod, I thought a spy thriller would work but it is my romantic comedy Cocktail that has clicked," he says.

If his last hit before Cocktail was Love Aaj Kal , also a self-produced romcom, Saif tells you he plans to launch something diametrically opposite after this. "I plan to make a spine-chilling, spooky version of Madhumati in black and white, which should take the audience by surprise," Saif adds.

For now, his mind is focused on Go Goa Gone. He is working with foreign technicians in departments such as photography, make-up and special effects to "get the international look". On Cocktail, his thoughts are practical. "Cocktail is an urban film meant for the multiplex audience. It has a predictable second half but the audience pays for genuine entertainment," he says.

The film has earned a profit of Rs.65 crore in the first week, re-establishing Saif as a romantic hero. "My mom (Sharmila Tagore) felt the girls in the film had the author-backed roles. The script was perfect for them and thus the film belonged to them," he says magnanimously.

His efforts to portray intense roles in Kurban, Aarakshan and Agent Vinod failed in recent times, and Saif says shooting for Cocktail with Diana Penty and Deepika Padukone was refreshing. "From the time we started shooting, I moulded myself into Gautam. Thinking as young as a 20-year-old is what helped me," he explains.

Despite his chock-a-block diary over the next 12 months, he is not missing out on the very important occasion of his marriage to Kareena Kapoor. He is reluctant to give out details but confirms the wedding will happen by the year-end. "We plan to get married by the end of the year but thereâ??s nothing more to it. Not much is planned as of now," the actor concludes.
