Vidya Balan's lavani number in Ferrari Ki Sawaari gets mixed reactions

The first promos of Vidya Balan's much-hyped item number in Ferrari Ki Sawaari are out, and the reactions seem to be mixed. While many fans feel the actress has done a good job recreating an authentic mood with her lavani number, Mala jau de, others think she is looking overweight for a dance that is primarily meant to serve as a Bollywood item number.

YouTube and Twitter are overflowing with film buffs reacting to the number positively as well as negatively. But a section of the industry feels Vidya should have been more careful about opting for the dance, considering it marks her debut as an item girl.

A trade analyst said: "The idea seems to be to present an authentic lavani dance, as opposed to Katrina Kaif's Chikni Chameli, which was basically a sexy filmy jig that fused lavani steps among other dance forms. "But the ultimate reason to have an item number is always to sex up a film's glamour quotient. An overweight Vidya may be looking like a real lavani dancer, but she may not strike a chord with Bollywood addicts with this song."

For Vidya, agreeing to do the dance seems to be in sync with her new policy of being different within mainstream parameters. After her National Award-winning role in The Dirty Picture and fabulous performance in Kahaani, there is considerable curiosity surrounding her item number. The song has been composed by Pritam and sung by budding singer Urmila Dhangar.

The film, Vidhu Vinod Chopra's latest production, is slated to release on June 15. It is said that Chopra had some problems getting distributors considering the film doesn't have much star power, and is billed as a solo starrer for Sharman Joshi.

To boost the film's prospects, Chopra roped in close friend and Munna Bhai maker Rajkumar Hirani to tweak the script, which he had initially written with Abbas Tyrewala. Vidya reportedly agreed to do the item number in the film for Chopra's sake. It was, after all, his 2005 hit Parineeta that marked her big-bang entry to Bollywood.
