RGV and Sanjay Dutt blame each other for ‘Department’ failure

RGV’s ‘Department, which tanked at the Box Office, has brought the differences of the team out in open. Ram Gopal Varma, who apparently developed creative differences with Sanjay Dutt, said he had a harrowing time working with the actor in the movie. Whereas Dutt said, “Hits and flops are a part of the industry. But I really don`t know if I shall work with Ramu again.”

Dutt, along with the CEO of his production, Dharam Oberoi, expressed displeasure over the way the film was handled by Varma. Dharam Oberoi said, "I am sure that I don`t want to work with Ramu on any other project in my life. We told Ramu so often those 5D cameras, which he used, are not apt to make a film but to no avail. Ramu just does not listen."

Dutt seconded Oberoi saying, "I have been in the industry for 32 years and I know which cameras are suitable and which are not. But ab kya karen? Jo ho gaya so ho gaya. But yes, I really don`t know at this point of time if I want to work with Ramu again."

A trade expert, talking to a daily said, “The film has incurred severe losses from the time it released.” Reportedly made at a budget of Rs. 30 crore, the film has so far been able to earn seven crore at the box office. While the shooting of the film was going on, there were reports that both Varma and Dutt were at loggerheads with each other. However, during media interactions both denied it.

But now, Oberoi says, "Department would have been worse had it not been for a few scenes that were reshot at Dutt`s insistence." ‘Department’ was panned by critics and audiences alike, despite the stellar cast comprising Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt and Rana Dagubatti.

RGV`s reaction to the outrage was predictable: "I don`t know what they are thinking and neither do I care... but from my side, I don`t want to see the faces of Sanjay Dutt and Dharam Oberoi for the rest of my life." "From forcing me to take Kangana (Kangana Ranaut) out of the film to constantly cornering me to change screenplay, I had the most horrible time working with Dutt," Varma said. "If Dutt and Oberoi think I am the bad in `Department` let’s wait for `Zilla Ghaziabad` and Soham`s film where I am not there to spoil their creative inputs," Varma said.
