The After Hrs review: Fatso

Film: Fatso
Director: Rajat Kapoor
Cast: Ranvir Shorey,Gul Panag,Purab Kohli, Neil Bhoopalam, Gunjan Bakshi,Brijendra Kala
Rating: **1/2

Don’t go by the name of the film that leads you to believe it’s some kind of a slapstick comedy. Yes, Ranvir Shorey’s Sudeep is fat and there are those typical jokes around his obesity, but the film is much more than that.

The story revolves around a group of young friends comprising Navin (Purab Kohli),Nandini (Gul Panag), Sudeep, Yash (Neil Bhoopalam) and Tanuja (Gunjan Bakshi). Navin and Nandini are in love with each other and are set to tie the knot. However, Navin and his two friends Sudeep and Yash meet with a car accident in which Navinloses his life.

Even as his friends are mourning, we see a hale and hearty Navin with a stranger called Vijay (Brijendra Kala) who is trying to convince him that he is dead.Next we see, Navin in what looks like a government office comprising all kinds of ‘dead’ people including those who have committed suicide, murdered or faced a natural death.

Soon, Navin is told that he has been brought before his time. It was actually Sudeep’s turn to die and the volunteer of Death Ministry had mistakenly brought Navin. An outraged Navin insists on going back to earth and marry Nandini. Even the officials of the death office agree but there’s a problem! His body has already been cremated according to the Hindu rites. Now, Navin is given an option of taking over Sudeep’s body or staying back! Navin chooses to become Sudeep and woo Nandini back .

What starts off as a run-of-the-mill youth film surprises you at every turn. Purab and Gul have a great chemistry while Ranvir delivers a super performance as the obese, weakSudeep who transforms into a livelier, exuberant guy with a zest for good things.

Brijendra Kala as the death messenger is a delight to watch. A rip-off from Alexander Hall's Oscar-winning 1941 film Here Comes Mr Jordan, also the inspiration behind Jhuk Gaya Aasman, Rajat Kapoor’s Fatso charms and raises a few chuckles. However, one wishes Kala's track was longer and the film more funnier.
