Vicky Donor: Keeping it real

Movie: Vicky Donor

Cast: Ayushman Khurana, Yami Gautam, Annu Kapoor

How do you take a subject like sperm donation and make it into a laugh riot that appeals to one and all? How do you make it truly funny without adding crass humour, vulgar dialogues or double innuendos that so many movies done in the recent past? This light-hearted treatment of a serious subject by Shoojit Sircar is what makes “Vicky Donor” one of the finest new age comedies from the Bollywood stable.

Plot

The story revolves around Vicky Arora (Ayushmann Khurana), a jobless Delhi-based Punjabi boy who is convinced by Baldev Chaddha (fabulously portrayed by Annu Kapoor) to become a sperm donor and thereby make some quick money as well as help society at large.

The lead cast played including Ashima Roy (Yaami Gautam), a Bengali girl working in a bank, and their spectacular debut performances is what makes the movie a lovable affair that leaves audiences laughing all along.

Relatable

“Vicky Donor” works thanks to its fresh approach and some great acting by the lead. At times, you wonder if the whole movie itself is a real life episode as it does not have any aspects that are not relatable in the real world. The writer, Juhi Chaturvedi does an amazing job of handling the array of cultural differences between the family of a Punjabi boy without a father and that of a Bengali girl without a mother. What adds drama is the effective encapsulation of the lifestyle in Delhi and its narrative that is beautifully adapted on the large screen.

Though Vicky is not convinced about being a sperm donor at start, the persuasive stance of Annu Kapoor is what convinces him to go ahead and become one. Hats off to Annu Kapoor who portrays the role of the owner of an infertility clinic and his amazing character that's so well thought out. At the end of it all, you only wish you got to watch him on the large screen more often. The chemistry between Vicky and Ashima and the soulful melodies that mix well with the story without breaking the flow of the film are aspects that add to its varied appeal. Simply put, “Vicky Donor” is an out and out entertainer. Thank you for the entertainment, Mr. Sircar!

Bottomline: Head out and catch this entertainer; it's a sure way to add a few hours of fun to your hectic lifestyle.
