Australia's Shaun Marsh played the match-winning knock with 68 not out as his side chased down a winning target of 164 with three balls remaining. The home side opted to bat first, with New Zealand's James Franklin playing a superb innings of 79 in 51 balls at the top of the order, smashing six fours and four sixes in the process.
Only Sachin Tendulkar (23) and Dinesh Karthik (35) made double figures in support of his efforts, though, as Parvinder Arwana and Praveen Kumar each took two wickets. There were also two run-outs as Mumbai posted 163 for six.
Kings XI's runs were spread more evenly across the order, with Nitin Saini and Mandeep Singh putting on 48 for the first wicket before Marsh's arrival. The number three faced just 40 deliveries, with five boundaries and three maximums to his name. Kieron Pollard, with two for 14 in his four overs, did his best to keep Mumbai in it, but with nine needed off the last over Marsh hit the first ball for six to all but ensure victory.
