Aamir Khan ‘borrows’ show title from country

Aamir Khan’s debut TV show, Satyameva Jayate, is of the people, for the people and belongs to the people of India. That fact is substantiated by the title that belongs to and can be used by 1.2 billion Indian citizens, but cannot be trademarked. Anyone can use it, at whim or will, provided they do not cause indignity to the phrase. B Shrinivas Rao, executive producer for Aamir Khan Productions Pvt. Ltd says, “We learnt this when we went to register the title.”

After they were told that they couldn’t copyright the title and could not tag it to any kind of promotional merchandising, several brainstorming sessions were held in which alternatives were suggested. “But Aamir was clear he wanted this title and nothing else, even though it belonged to the country and he’d have to borrow it,” adds Rao, reasoning that it describes best the nature of the pan-India chat show.

Satyameva Jayate is expected to flag off around June, post the IPL. It showcases real people from different walks of life and unfiltered emotions. Aamir has been working on the concept for the last three years since Uday Shankar, CEO, Star India, suggested he contemplate getting into TV. It wil be aired on Star and across regional channels in eight different languages.
