The awards on Ranbir Kapoor’s shelf show no signs of easing up anytime soon, nor does the applause he’s receiving for Rockstar. But let alone cash in on the success of the film, Ranbir has almost consciously been avoiding signing on the more commercial projects. He is currently working on Anurag Basu’s Barfi, and after that will come Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet, both films which would be termed “off-beat”.
Ranbir insists the line between arthouse and commercial cinema has blurred. “Films like Wake Up Sid, Rocket Singh or Rockstar or Barfi are all engaging and entertaining films. I don’t see them as arthouse cinema. The line between the two has dimmed if you believe in the director’s vision and the story,” he says. What’s more, he says he doesn’t believe in sticking to his comfort zones, insisting that it’s his duty as an actor to try out newer genres. “I cannot do a Singham or a Dabangg because I will fail in it. I don’t have the stardom or persona to carry it off. I can play Jordan because I knew director Imtiaz Ali will inspire me to give my best. I can’t do a film that relies on me. I need to rely on the movie,” he explains.
Emraan Rush ed out of his vanity
Emraan Hashmi had quite a harrowing experience recently, when the lack of a vanity van on the sets of Rush tested his patience to the limits. Emraan, who’s shooting for the film opposite Neha Dhupia in Goa, reached the location and was then told there was no vanity van reserved for him.
“He asked for his van, but there seemed to have been some miscommunication which resulted in there not being a van for him. Any other actor would have thrown a massive fit here, but Emraan showed his accommodating side,” says an eyewitness from the film’s sets, adding that he chose to wait it out in an Innova car and sweated it out.
“In fact, he even asked the unit members to stop panicking. He insisted that he was comfortable in the Innova and even had his lunch in the car,” the eyewitness adds. Rush is a crime thriller where Emraan plays an investigative journalist who is suddenly plunged into a deadly vortex, as he is forced to play cat and mouse with his life at stake.
