While ‘Agent Vinod’s song ‘Pyaar Ki Pungi’ rides high on the popularity wave – the hype around the film is just getting escalated. As the news goes – the music director and the distributors are now facing a copyright violation for the song from an Iranian band.
The Iranian band – Barobax Corp – has slapped a legal notice on music director Pritam Chakraborty and distributors for the violation. The song in question is from the album called ‘Soosan Khanoom’ and is performed by the three band members - Kashayar Haghgoo, Kevian Haghgoo and Hamid Farouzmand, released in Januray 2010. The band owns the copyright on the song as that is registered under the Copyright Act in Canada since June 30, 2010 and the song cannot be used without permission.
And this is not the first time music director Pritam has faced controversial brickbats or legal notices. His song ‘Dum Maro Dum’ from the 2010 film ‘Dum Maro Dum’ had obscenity charges slapped on for the video as well as the lyrics. Many wondered aloud why Pritam never gave RD Burman the credit of the song and apparently Dev Anand was pretty unhappy with the number as well.
Down the line – Anu Malik – who is known for lifting off songs from others without credit – accused Pritam of ripping off his song. Malik alleged that Pritam had lifted off his song ‘Mohabbat Naam Hai Kiska’ from the movie ‘Ajnabee’ and had used it for the song ‘Character Dheela’ in Anees Bazmee’s ‘Ready’. Though he contemplated filling suit for the song – nothing more was heard on that front.
Pritam is facing copyright violation charges for the song – and that could alternately work very well for the movie. But the audience is rushing in online to check out the ‘original’ number to find out for themselves. Listen to the ‘apparent’ original number ‘Soosan Khanoom’.
