He may be currently shooting STUDENT OF THE YEAR in the cool of Srinagar but Karan Johar can be definitely expected to be facing quite a lot of heat. His two releases this year are also the top grossers of the year so far. While this may be a lot comforting for many filmmakers, for Karan these developments have taken an altogether different meaning. After all, his protege Karan Malhotra is now the first ever director to score a 100 crore earner in his debut outing AGNEEPATH whereas Shakun Batra too has managed a decent acclaim for himself with EK MAIN AUR EKK TU.
This means now it is Karan's turn to raise further standards and deliver something extraordinary, especially since he comes with a decade and a half of movie making experience and his MY NAME IS KHAN is still travelling worldwide despite being in the circulation for two years.
''One can't expect anything lesser than him,'' comments a trade source, ''He realizes this as well and though on the exterior he is keeping all cool and calm, deep inside he knows that his STUDENT OF THE YEAR would be looked at with a magnifying glass.''
No wonder, his concentration has been into making a good film and in parallel his marketing and promotional team are coming up with various options to ensure that there is extraordinary hype by the time STUDENT OF THE YEAR is ready for release. Though all 100 crore grosser films so far have featured experienced superstars, a number like this for an all-debutant film would require that magical touch by Karan.
''Really, he is not thinking on such lines. In fact he never discusses such things even with people who direct films for him,'' says a friend, 'All he does is discuss on the budget of a film based on a subject. Of course the same applies for his film as well.''
