Spontaneity is Shekhar Suman's middle name. Be it while doing his comic acts on telly or fielding questions about himself. He was in Ahmedabad to promote the new season of Movers and Shakers on SAB TV. Excerpts from a chat:
How does it feel to make a comeback with your show? I'm happy and excited. It feels like a second honeymoon. And at the same time, there's a nervousness because I don't know how much the taste of audience has changed. So, I've got some butterflies in my stomach too. I am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best.
You come up with a different take on political happenings? How do you manage it? I read a lot on political happenings and then react. Politics is a very heavy-on-head topic, so to make it light and humorous without sounding vulgar is definitely a challenge. My ready wit comes handy. I prefer to be 'apolitical' so that I can comment or pass on satire on any political happenings. I have to thank Atal (Bihari Vajpayee) ji and Laloo (Prasad Yadav) ji as they were my favourite characters to enact in most of my political humors.
You've judged many seasons of Comedy Circus. Why did you pull yourself out of the show? l I think the makers chose to keep me out as they must have felt I'm not capable enough to judge it. I'm discerning and can't laugh at everything put forward by the contestants. I was bored of the show and I guess the makers were bored of me too.
You've been away from fiction on television. Why? Nothing worthwhile is coming my way. The last fiction show I did was Main. Now things are so different so far as fiction based shows are concerned. Plus, I don't have it in me to take up a daily soap. If something really challenging comes my way, I will take it up. Although, I'd be happiest if Dekh Bhai Dekh is remade!
You've done films, TV serials, reality shows. What next? I'm a restless person. I want to keep exploring new dimensions. I see something and I wish to take inspiration from that. That keeps me going. Now, I'm going to turn producer and director. I'm making a medical thriller, Heartless. The shoot will start from May. I'm greedy. I'm not content with producing and directing. I might end up with a role for myself in my film. And in future, I might write a book too. (laughs)
How close you are to your son Adhyayan? I should say he is the apple of my eyes. He is my world. I ensure that I spend a lot of time with my family as that's what matters in the end. After losing my elder son, my entire focus has been on Adhyayan. He listens to what I tell him. I still remember sharing the dance floor with him at Jhallak Dikhlaa Jaa on the song Papa Jag Jaayega, it was sheer delight.
How involved are you in his career? (Laughs) I think I'm more involved in his career in Bollywood than he is. He is young, he has age on his side and doesn't have to worry about the finances. I made numerous mistakes when it came to choosing scripts. I don't want Adhyayan to make the mistakes I did. I always tell him to go slow and steady.
