New Delhi: The unpredictability of the summer with its sudden squalls and searing heat is reflected in Bollywood's six releases this Friday that chase shadows in South Mumbai's Bhindi Bazaar and mark the return of compulsive do-gooder Bharat Bhushan. The weekend is a double whammy for character actor Kay Kay Menon who is competing against himself at the box office in 'Bheja Fry 2' and 'Bhindi Baazaar Inc.' At least two of Friday's six releases have performances by foreign models trying to break into Bollywood. What happens if you are marooned on an island with an idiot?
Producer Mukul Deora brings back compulsive do-gooder Bharat Bhushan with his quirky humour in Sagar Ballary's 'Bheja Fry 2'. After the resounding success of 'Bheja Fry' (2007), actor Vinay Pathak and Kay Kay Menon team up for the sequel that sees them marooned on an island in each other’s company. While actor Rajat Kapoor gets a reprieve this time around from bad jokes and simple intentions that backfire, Bhushan is as annoying as ever with his cascading laughter and witticisms on life. The credit goes to writer Sharad Kataria for literally reconstructing Pathak’s character from where he took off in 2007 expressing a desire to evolve as a singer of some repute and pursuing it with serious intent in the sequel.
The story that begins on an island this Friday next takes viewers to notes scratched on desks and neatly tied plaits as a bunch of teenagers fight, make-up, love and hate in 'Always Kabhi Kabhi' directed by Roshan Abbas and produced by actor Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment. The life of four students – played by Ali Fazal, Giselle Monteiro, Satyadev Dubey and Zoa Morani - changes forever in the last year of school.
Remember Harleen Kaur from 'Love Aaj Kal'? Well, Giselle who played the Punjabi lass in the Saif Ali Khan flick, is back in AKK as a shy teenager. The Brazilian model, who chanced upon Hindi cinema on a modeling trip to India, is clearly enjoying herself and fast picking up a smattering of Hindi.Director Vinod Chhabra assembles a 'That 80s Show' cast with an over-the-top Shakti Kapoor and a talented but jaded Rati Agnihotri in 'My Husband's Wife' that attempts to highlight the plight of Indian immigrants and the cultural confusion of their second generation born and brought up in an environment that clashes with their traditional values and morals.
A lot of hope is riding on director Shashi Silgudia's 'Cycle Kick' – a story of youth and resilience told in the simple narrative of a football match to establish ownership over a beaten down cycle – the symbol of affluence and status in village life. It is the story of two brothers and how the chance finding of a dilapidated cycle brings small comforts in their daily struggle. Tom Alter is back on the silver screen after a hiatus.
The most-awaited movie of the lot is 'Bhindi Baazaar Inc.' shot in the shadowy bylanes of South Mumbai that embraces and provides livelihood to millions and harbours in its dark nook and crannies small time criminals and petty thieves. Ankush Bhatt’s dark thriller stars Kay Kay Menon, Piyush Mishra, Prashant Narayanan and Caterina Lopez and has a sizzling debut by Vedita Pratap Singh. 'Bin Bulaye Baarati' is a mad cap action comedy about a group of crooks escaping from the police. Mallika Sherawat is back in an item number and Aftab Shivdasani can be seen after a long hiatus. 'Bin Bulaye Baarati' promises to be a crowd pleasing low-brow comedy that will round up Friday, June 17 movie marathon.
