Bollywood's Amitabh Bachchan to leave hospital soonBollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan, who had successful abdominal surgery last week, is getting better and is likely to be discharged from hospital soon. The 69-year-old actor, who has a history of abdominal ailments, was operated on in the western city of Mumbai last week.

On Thursday, he tweeted that he may have to undergo a second operation. Bachchan has acted in more than 180 Indian films over 40 years. He remains India's most popular actor. "He is doing fine now... his health is also improving.

He might be discharged by tomorrow [Tuesday] or day-after-tomorrow [Wednesday]," Press Trust of India reported quoting hospital sources on Monday.

The actor underwent an abdominal surgery on 11 February and his family said it had gone well and "everything was normal". But after he complained of acute abdominal pain, his stay at the hospital was extended amid reports of another operation. But on Sunday, the actor tweeted that he was getting better.

'Improving'

"A welcome day. Many aspects improving, many reports positive, smiling satisfied faces all around... your prayers work so well.. Hunger pangs swell for the first time... doctors say it's a good sign… hope so," he wrote on Twitter.

The actor tweeted that "the various drips and tubes stuck into the body" were gradually disappearing and that he had watched the India-Australia match on Sunday. "Saw some TV... the India-Australia match. Sad we lost," he wrote on Twitter. Late on Thursday, the star had tweeted that he needed some more tests, medicines and perhaps another operation.

"Going to be a long stay. "I have no idea now how long this will take, but it does look as though it will be long." Bachchan had surgery for an intestinal condition at the same hospital in 2005. Three years later, he was admitted to a hospital with abdominal pains. The actor suffered a near fatal injury during the shooting of an action scene on the set of a film in 1982 and was critically ill for several months.

Last year Bachchan returned as the celebrity host of Kaun Banega Crorepati, the Indian version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire - one of the most watched shows on Indian television. He is also to make his Hollywood debut in a new film adaptation of The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, due to be released late this year.
