Virat Kohli's well-crafted 77 was shaping up as the defining innings of the match until he attempted a needless single and was caught well short of his crease by a superb pick and throw.
The ball before he risked that single, Kohli who was cramping up in pain – had struck a lovely straight six off Dhammika Prasad to leave the equation at 53 from 85 balls. But inexplicably, off the final ball, he tapped the ball in front of mid-on and charged off. Lasith Malinga ran in and nailed an excellent direct hit to catch Kohli well short.
As India's last recognized batsman, Kohli had erred big time. Kohli had fallen in almost the same way during the Test series, batting with Ishant Sharma.
