Year 2011 was a rollercoaster ride in Bollywood. While some films flourished on certain formula, others were doomed to oblivion. The first big hit of 2011 was Zoya Akhtar's Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. The film triumphed on account of its real life situations and characters. A light-hearted tale of a fun, all-boys road trip through Spain peppered with the presence of an incredibly hot Katrina Kaif was a super hit.

What worked for the film were the three hot musketeers, picturesque Spain in all its glory, Katrina on a bike and a lip-lock between her and Hrithik Roshan. One-man army, a formula unto himself and the god of good things in 2011, Salman Khan doled out one of the biggest hits of the year gone by in Ready. Another film from the hit machine that had the viewers hooked was Bodyguard. To keep things real, Salman got his bodyguard of 15 years Shera to spearhead all promotional activity. Yamla Pagla Deewana played up on the nostalgia factor. The beloved Deols charmed their way into a nation sold on dance and music along with family drama. What worked for the film was the Deols and an overdose of all things Punjabi.

Vidya Balan scaled up on the hot meter with The Dirty Picture. The film, loosely based on the life of late southern siren Silk Smitha turned out to be an instant crowd-puller. What worked for the film was the bold and sultry Vidya and the dialogues that were up on sleaze and sexual innuendoes.

Imtiaz Ali's baby Rockstar was the flavour of the season with Ranbir Kapoor, his musical genius and an attempt to handle his pain and fame. The film swept critics and commoners by its sheer power and depth. What worked for the film was a grand performance by Ranbir, pretty new girl Nargis Fakhri and late Shammi Kapoor in a special appearance.

The don of good times sealed the year on a high note with Farhan Akhtar's second instalment in the newborn Don franchise. Slick action, burning foreplay like chemistry between Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra and an arrogant streak made this cinematic outing a total crowd puller.
