She hit the silver screen as a classic beauty in Saawariya (2007). Then, she donned the girl-next-door look in Delhi 6 (2009), followed by ultra glamorous avatars last year in I Hate Luv Storys and Aisha. But now, Sonam who played a simpleton in her last film Mausam has gone in for an edgy, sexy and uber cool look in Abbas-Mustan’s Players, largely thanks to her sister Rhea.
For the film, Rhea has put together a wardrobe which isn’t typically sexy, but falls more in the bracket of edgy. “Naina, my character, is a girl who is defiant and independent, but still vulnerable. So, the inspiration for Rhea was to create a style statement that communicates her kick-ass and rock-and-roll attitude but with an innocence and a subtle sensuality,” says Sonam.
The producer-sister, for the uninformed, had also styled Sonam’s wardrobe for their home production, Aisha. “Rhea also made sure nothing was over-the-top. My character, for instance, never wears pink and she would never care to match clothes’ colours,” says Anil Kapoor’s elder daughter. As a result, Rhea used a lot of leather to give a sexy look in the action thriller, Players the official remake of the Hollywood heist caper, The Italian Job (2003).
“Yes, Rhea designed a lot of clothes in leather and also gave me really tight jeans besides using kohl for my eyes,” says the actor. In fact, for two songs in the film, Rhea also teamed up with fashion designers to create the perfect look for her sister.
“She collaborated with Falguni & Shane for Ladki Hai Naadan… and Shehla Khan for Jhoom…,” informs Sonam. After this film though, the actor will return to a simpleton avatar, once she starts shooting for Rakeysh Mehra’s Bhaag Milkha Bhaag with Farhan Akhtar. Reportedly, she will also be seen in Rhea’s next production, which is expected to hit the floors by mid-next year.
