It’s not easy being Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma. The pair, among Bollywood’s hottest young stars, had a huge box office hit in their last movie together Band Baaja Baaraat. Expectations are high from their next release, Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, which has its world premiere at DIFF this evening. Anushka and Ranveer admit that the pressure is on, but at a press conference this morning for the film at Madinat Jumeirah, they added that they’ll be doing their best, so no worries!

There’s a huge buzz around Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, not just because it reunites Ranveer and Anushka but also because its subject – women getting back at a conman who duped them – is fairly unusual for Bollywood. Ranveer, who plays said conman Ricky Bahl, tells us that it was a very exciting character to portray. “As conmen tend to be, he is a real charmer. The charmer part came to me naturally as I’m like that in real-life too!” So, Ranveer’s one for being completely honest! We do love that he doesn't have that entire false modesty thing going on!

Anushka, who plays Ishika Desai in Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, says her character represents India’s working class. “Ishika’s a modern Indian girl - intelligent and very hardworking,” revealed the actress, who wore a black jumpsuit to the press conference and looked as stunning as ever.

Ranveer and Anushka have been on a promotional blitzkrieg for the movie, and he confesses that they often get told the same thing by fans. “They always say ‘We expect a lot from you’. What can you do? You just try your best.” Anushka added, “The pressure is always there but one has to disconnect at times. We’ve just tried to make an honest film.”

It’s definitely also a fun film, even though things got quite crazy while shooting. There was an incident in which Anushka was nearly swept to sea! Anushka reveals more, “I never felt stupider. I am a good swimmer but while shooting on a jetski, a huge wave came at us. It was like a mini tsunami and I was very scared.”

Did Ranveer rush to her rescue? The leading man replies, “I was trying to be pretty macho to protect the lady but I knew what was going on inside. It was fun to see Anushka, who is usually calm and controlled, getting scared.”

There’ve been rumours that Ladies vs Ricky Bahl is similar to the Hollywood film John Tucker Must Die, but the stars of the Hindi movie dismiss that talk. “Our movie is absolutely different from John Tucker Must Die. It’s just the idea of the movie featuring three girls and a guy that’s making people think that. The cultural setting and characterisations are very different.” And what do Anushka and Ranveer want audiences to take back from the movie? Ranveer has the last word, “It’s hardly an intellectual film, it’s a fun film. Just go with your popcorn and enjoy.”
