A picture, it is said, speaks a thousand words. But a Bollywood poster seems to bring to mind just one word: rip-off.
It isn't anything new for Hindi scriptwriters and composers to look beyond the borders of B-town for ideas, and now, film posters seem to be a way to showcase how 'inspired' Bollywood's publicity campaigns are. The latest one to get tongues wagging on online discussion forums is the second poster that has been released for the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Ra.One, which bears an uncanny resemblance to that of Batman Begins. The only difference - Kareena Kapoor seems to be baring more of her midriff than Katie Holmes.
But this hasn't been the only poster to become a talking point this year. When the first poster for Zoya Akhtar's Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara was unveiled in April, film buffs noticed that it bore a striking similarity to the poster for the 2005 surfer-and-skater flick Lords of Dogtown. And the first poster of Delhi Belly, which shows a bruised and battered Imran Khan flanked by Vir Das and Kunal Roy Kapoor, seems to have a Hollywood Hangover, so to speak, sans the baby.
Earlier this year, when Mohit Suri and Mahesh Bhatt couldn't decide on which poster they should choose to lead Murder 2's publicity campaign, they decided to let viewers vote to settle the matter. However, two of the poster options were rip-offs - one from the poster for the Chinese film Bad Guy, and the other from the Lars Von Trier thriller Antichrist.
Going by these developments, it seems that Bollywood is pretty poster perfect.
