Bollywood actor Imran Khan on Wednesday filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Bombay High Court challenging the Maharashtra government's policy of raising the legal age limit for consuming liquor from 21 to 25. After filing the PIL, Khan, nephew of actor Aamir Khan, told reporters, "By this PIL, I am not promoting drinking but fighting for the constitutional right of the youths in India. When a 21-year-old is allowed to marry, vote and do several other things then he or she should also be allowed to indulge in any legal activity including consumption of liquor."

The state government had come up with a new de-addiction policy, aimed at prohibiting sale of illicit liquor and regulating sale of legal brands, which was approved by the Cabinet in June this year. Lamenting that young people were considered irresponsible in this country, he said, "A major can decide for himself what is right and wrong." "In my youth even I have consumed alcohol but responsibly." Terming it as "unconstitutional" and a violation of the Fundamental Rights of the Constitution of India, the PIL has sought a stay on the government notification "pending the admission, hearing and final disposal of this petition".
