Making a debut in a Ranbir Kapoor starrer is sheer luck. Not everybody gets a chance to work with the whole Kapoor family either but Pallavi had a triple bonanza. The movie may have flopped at the box office but Pallavi is still positive about her foray into the industry. A chats with the pretty actress.
How did ‘Besharam’ happen?
I met Abhinav Kashyap about a year-and-a-half ago and I really liked his energy. I found him to be an incredibly funny man with an interesting take on life. I heard he was casting for a film called ‘Besharam’ so we had a chat about it and he asked me to audition for the film. I went in one day and spent four hours in his office with his AD team and got into the character of Tara Sharma. About a day later I got a call from him saying ‘Hi Pallavi I think you’ve done a decent job in your first round, the second round’s gonna be even harder’. He freaked me out and the second round involved meeting Ranbir my co-actor. I don’t really understand when exactly they made the decision to cast me but I just went from being Pallavi Sharda to Pallavi Sharda the ‘Besharam’ girl.
What was it like to be introduced opposite Ranbir Kapoor?
I think Ranbir Kapoor is the most talented person I’ve ever seen on the Indian screen. I’ve seen the kind of films he’s done but what I liked about him is that he’s such a great, humble, warm and selfless co-actor. He’s one of India’s biggest superstars; I love his work and I think he’s just an amazing human being.
Were you nervous working with the Kapoors?
I don’t think I chickened out in front of the Kapoors. I would like to think I held my own. Or at least I was trying to hold my own. I was definitely conscious of the magnitude of what was happening; Rishi Sir is such a senior actor and I’ve been watching him for many years… ‘Chandni’ was one of my favourite films. There was this huge legacy that I witnessing in front of me and I had to remove myself from that and just be an actor. And just treat them like senior actors. The great thing is they are also like Ranbir – selfless and humble. They make sure that everyone around them is comfortable so that the scene can happen in the best way possible. I had a lot to learn from both Neetuji and Rishiji. For me, it was a triple bonanza offer.
What does the word besharam mean to you?
Besharam is what my parents called me my whole life and I always took it as compliment! It meant that I was doing what I needed to without any inhibitions. Besharam is something or someone who doesn’t worry about what people think of them. They just go ahead and get what they want in life.
