Pakistani fashion designer Maria B says people across the border are crazy about Indian fashion especially for designs worn by Bollywood actresses. Maria says she often gets bridal clients in Pakistan asking for sarees worn by Priyanka Chopra and Kareena Kapoor from Bollywood movies. "I know so many girls who come for bridal appointments and they want us to create something similar to what Bollywood actresses wear in their films. There is a lot of inspiration coming from India whether it's from films, fashion weeks, Lucknow's intricate chikan work or traditional South wear," Maria told PTI. A graduate from Pakistan School of Fashion Design, Maria is on her maiden trip to India with her pret collection.
"This is the first time that I am doing a show here. What's sad is when we meet people across border they are exactly like us. We look the same, have same food choices and fashion choices but for some political reasons we two cannot stay together. I hope that a day comes when the two nations make peace because we are missing out on so much," she added. Maria is an acclaimed designer in Pakistan and her brand is also one of the largest manufacturer and retailer of women's fashion garments in the country. For her pret show in India, Maria collaborated with Sahiba, a leading Indian textile company.
"Pakistani lawn has become a trade mark across the world. Sahiba came to Pakistan recently and they thought it would be great if we came to India with our designs. I thought it was a great idea because it's ground breaking in its essence as nobody has ever done something like this before," she added. The collection, starting from Rs 2000, will be distributed by Sahiba in various stores across India. Maria says that her designs are not rated at exorbitant prices because she believes middle class is her market.
