Karan Johar: Don't blame Bollywood for rise in rape cases

The leading producer and director of Bollywood Karan Johar was reacting to the questions by the media about the gang rape of a photo journalist in Mumbai that has enraged the nation yet again. He was meeting the press after the screening of THE LUNCHBOX, a film written and directed by Ritesh Batra, and presented by Disney UTV and Dharma Productions in India. The cast of the art house film that had its world premiere in the Cannes Critics' Week this year includes Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Denzil Smith, Nakul Vaid and Lillete Dubey.

Earlier, Irrfan Khan, the lead actor of the film, had blamed the presentation of women as objects of desire for rise in rape cases and had said that the menace would grow further in future. When asked by a media person if Bollywood item numbers were also responsible for presenting women as objects of desire, Karan Johar said that cinema did not really have much impact on society. Had that been the case, people should have also been following the good values preached by it. He concluded that Bollywood should not be treated as a soft target of blame for all the wrongs in society.
