Fans of Vidya Balan who were anticipating her return in the sequel to the 2012 hit 'Kahaani', may just have to wait longer. 'Kahaani 2' has hit choppy waters with director Sujoy Ghosh dashing off a letter to Jayantilal Gada, CMD of PEN India Pvt Ltd and co-producer of 'Kahaani', making a slew of demands, least of which is wanting to be the sole producer of the sequel. In the letter, Ghosh, who made Kahaani on a shoe-string budget of Rs 8 crore, has demanded a whopping Rs 35 crore from Gada for the sequel. This includes Rs 28 crore as the cost of making plus Ghosh's directorial fees, and Rs 7 crore as expenditure on publicity. And that's not all. Among other demands, Ghosh has put forth that Pen India will only finance the film. That he be paid in advance at various stages which he has specified - commencement of pre-production, post-production and censorship. That music and satellite rights rest with Ghosh's company Boundscript and there be no co-signatory from Pen India on board. When Mirror contacted Ghosh he said, "No nothing like that." But he was quick to add: "Pen India has every right to refuse Kahaani 2. An offer has been made to make the film together. If Pen India accepts, I will do it with them. Else, I will have to look for someone else.
" Gada, who is reeling under shock, has made it clear that Pen India won't accept Ghosh's terms and conditions lying down. "How can I accept such things unconditionally? Most importantly, as per our original agreement, Sujoy has no right to make the sequel without our consent," he thundered. To add insult to injury, Ghosh has ended his letter to Gada saying if he doesn't get a reply stating 'unconditional acceptance of his terms and conditions', he will consider it as Gada's refusal to be a part of Kahaani 2. Terming Ghosh's letter as 'irrational', Gada's company has shot off a reply to Ghosh's company saying they would be interested in the sequel if and only if Ghosh can send them a confirmation letter from Vidya that she is doing the film, the break-up budget and the full script of Kahaani 2. When contacted, Gada said, "We are 50-50 partners in the Kahaani franchise. Our reply to Ghosh is fully justified." A source close to him told TOI: "When Sujoy directed Kahaani, he never asked for any part payments in advance. The music and satellite rights were also with Pen India. Moreover, how can he ask for so many things, that too without showing us the script?"
