Madhuri Dixit disrupts her shoot to save seven puppies

Award-winning actor and long-time PETA supporter Madhuri Dixit was at Filmistan with her husband Dr Shriram Nene for the shoot of her show 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa', when she saw seven puppies drenched from the previous night's rain and struggling for their lives. Dixit interrupted the shoot, and she, Dr Nene and the show's director, Saahil Chhabria, immediately contacted PETA and stayed with the puppies until help arrived. "It has been raining cats and dogs, and many puppies and kittens are now in need of good homes. Madhuri Dixit's, Dr Nene's and Saahil Chhabria's kind deed will inspire many people to come forward to help animals in distress,'' says PETA India's Sachin Bangera. "This act of compassion shows that Madhuri is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside.''

This isn't the first time that Madhuri has helped animals. A few months ago, she saw a crow hanging from a wire at her window and quickly called her friends at PETA to help free the bird. In 2001, after learning that elephants were being mercilessly killed in Assam, she sent a letter on behalf of PETA India to officials in that region. Madhuri made her film debut in ABODH in 1984 and received wider public recognition with TEZAAB in 1988. She has won six Filmfare Awards, four for Best Actress, and holds the record for the highest number of Best Actress nominations (13) at Filmfare. In 2008, she was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award granted by the government of India. Dixit currently has two films in the works.
