Bollywood actress Nafisa alias Jiah Khan (right) was depressed about her faltering film career and her rocky relationship with actor Aditya Pancholi's son, Suraj, and this could be the reason for her suicide, the police suspect. The New York-born actress was found hanging from the ceiling fan by her dupatta or scarf at her flat on June 4, around midnight, when her mother and sister had gone out. Jiah was 25. No suicide note was found at the scene. Jiah, who made a memorable debut opposite Amitabh Bachchan in the 2007 film Nishabd, could also have been upset as she had failed to get a role in a Tamil film she auditioned for on June 1, police said. The producers apparently told the London-born actress that she was underweight. This was probably the last straw for Jiah, who had been struggling to bag a lead role in Bollywood since Nishabd.
She was also seen as the second lead with Aamir Khan and Asin in the 2008 blockbuster Ghajini and had played a small role in Sajid Khan's Housefull with Akshay Kumar. Her distraught mother, Rabiya, was reported saying: "She (Jiah) was fed up with the struggle... she was besotted with Bollywood, but Bollywood had nothing to offer her." The actress was laid to rest on June 5. Several from the industry paid their respects at her residence. Among them were Riteish Deshmukh, Sophie Choudry, Anju Mahendru, Prem Chopra, Urvashi Dholakia and Aamir Khan. Actress Sonam Kapoor tweeted: "Nobody should be in so much pain and a state of such hopelessness. I hope her soul finds some respite in death."
