Says the film was 'slightly incomplete' when it screened at Cannes and subdued response has nothing to do with it Anurag Kashyap is planning to tweak portions of Ugly before its Indian release, perhaps due to the relatively low-key response the film received at Cannes. When contacted, Kashyap said his film had received a thunderous response at the recently concluded festival while admitting he has to incorporate a few changes. "The audience reaction was superb. A few reviews were bad because these guys were expecting another Wasseypur. I'm sorry Ugly is not Wasseypur.
I have to work on the sound and the SFX because we had submitted a slightly incomplete copy at Cannes. It was the same case with my previous films last year," said Kashyap. He sounded angry about the fact that while the other films produced by him that were part of the selection garnered a good response with Ritesh Batra's Lunchbox getting picked up by Sony Classics, there was a lot of resentment back home. He claimed there are people in the industry who are suspicious about five of his films having made it to the selection. "Some people are bitter about the fact that five of our films were shortlisted. I am not part of any camp, association or union. I have fought my battles alone and faced my troubles alone. They (critics) can form any opinion that they like," he thundered.
"These people are of the opinion that Cannes is like Indian award ceremonies, which you can fix well in advance," he quipped. Kashyap rubbished allegations that his attitude toward filmmaking has undergone a sea change. "I have always done co-productions with major studios. Black Friday was with Adlabs, No Smoking with Eros, Dev D, Aamir and Udaan was with UTV. I think the media made me the face of indie cinema and now has a problem with that face. Within the constraints that I have to operate in, I have done more for independent cinema in this country than any other filmmaker. If anybody else has, it has always been for some selfish intention," he shot back.
