Yesterday, I chanced upon Mallika Sherawat‘s interview to Variety Studio. Speaking in a disturbingly ornate and put up accent, the actress almost claimed to be India’s most progressive actress. Extremely ignorant about facts in Bollywood, she went on International television and proclaimed incorrect information, both about herself and Hindi cinema. I am compelled to say, Miss Sherawat, kindly get your facts right. In the interview Mallika proclaimed that she was the First Actress to kiss on screen in India. Apalled at this uninformed statement, I almost fell down my chair. Sherawat, who clearly has a very hazy idea about films, should check her tongue before she spills out false facts. Kissing on screen in Bollywood dates back to the 1920s and Seeta Devi was the first Hindi film actress to lip lock on screen in 1929.
I could actually come up with myriad names of actresses who have kissed on celluloid decades before even your parents were conceived! You really think very shadily of Hindi cinema, don’t you? Now the bit about sporting a bikini. Though you used skin flaunting and smooching as the shortcut to fame with Govind Menon’s Khwahish in 2003, contrary to your belief, you need to check out Sharmila Tagore’s hot bikini pose on the cover of Filmfare magazine. Looking way more bold, she had infact done it more aesthetically compared to your desperate desire to pointlessly show skin.
And finally the last bit which as a member of film fraternity, I was heavily offended by. It is not cool to go on international television and slam the fraternity which has nourished you and mostly made you famous. Showing a clear lack of gratitude, you perhaps lost out on the respect you might have acquired for your straight forward and strong demeanor. Now you seem like a clumsily informed, factually incorrect, shallow actress!
