Sasheh Agha, daughter of the yesteryear actress-singer of Nikaah fame, will make her foray into playback singing in her debut film with Arjun Kapoor Thirty years ago, Salma Agha won the Filmfare Award for her song Dil Ke Armaan in BR Chopra's Nikaah. And now, her daughter, Sasheh ( Yes, that is how she spells her name now!) is planning to repeat history. Aurangzeb, the film that will mark her debut as an actress, will also see her venture into playback singing. It is a peppy club track titled Barbadiyan and also features her co-star Arjun Kapoor.
The young actress insists she wants to make a career in acting and singing simultaneously. "I have learnt singing from my mom and I don't plan to give it up because I am very passionate about it," she says. It was while auditioning for the film, that Shanu Sharma of Yash Raj discovered her singing talent. Says Sasheh: "She asked me what else I could do besides acting and when I told them I could sing, they asked me to give them a demo. I guess everybody liked my singing. Months later, when I was shooting for the film, I was told that I will have to sing for the film as well.
I am so glad that Adi Sir ( Aditya Chopra) decided to give me the chance to sing in the film." Talking about her experience of working with Chopra, she says: "He is a dream to work with. Once you know that he is holding your hand, you have nothing to worry about." Trained in the Kirana Gharana of music since childhood, Sasheh says music runs in her family. "Musicians Sajid and Wajid are my maternal uncles. My stepsister is the famous English singer-songwriter and multi instrumentalist Natasha Khan, who goes by the stage name Bat for Lashes.
My great grand father was Jugal Kishore Mehra, who was Raj Kapoor's uncle and married to Anwari Begum—the famous singer. My grandmother Nusrin Agha, was a well-known singer as well. So in a way, I am the fourth generation singer in my family," she rattles off. Slamming reports that she changed her name from Zara to Sasha due to the MMS scandal, she says: "I changed my name before the debut because I found the name nice! Besides, my mother is a believer of numerology and I respect that," she rests her case.
