Interview: Commando Music Director Manan Shah

How did you bag this movie Commando?

Dilip sir had narrated me the whole script. He had a different idea in his mind and he believed that I could do it. I was assisting Pritam for a year and after assisting him and getting all the experience, I began composing my own music. Then I narrated my songs to Vipul and Dilip Sir. They loved my work and it was then I made a few different 'hatke' songs for them and they selected few of them.

How are the songs of Commando different from the others?
Two songs of the film Lut Jawan and Lena Dena are very different. Very few action films have Punjabi songs and Commando is one of them. To bring some more drama and emotion, we have included a romantic track titled 'Saawan Bairy'.

When did you decide to become a music director?
I always dreamt of composing and making good music. I always wanted to become a musician. But I was not sure whether I could become a full fledged Music Director at the age of 25. (Smiling) Music directors start their career at 30 but I am just 25.

What did you do to make music of Commando unique?
The lyrical content of the Commando movie songs and its composition is different as it is totally a Live music. Live musicians contributed to the film. Like 'Saawan Bairy', if you listen to the complete song, there is free flow of flute and Saarangi. I personally believe that live music creates a magic. In 'lena dena,' which is a Punjabi Song, we used a shahnai piece, that is typical Indian classic shehnai. We also used
Dhuliki.
